What many autistic people actually experience is the opposite: too much, too fast, unfiltered, with no way to switch it off. The term for this is hyperempathy, and it describes a neurological mechanism, not a character trait.
What actually happens in the nervous system
Autistic perception processes sensory and social input bottom-up, from raw data toward meaning rather than the other way around. Facial expressions, postures, tones of voice, breathing rhythms, tension between people, all of it lands fully in the system before anything is filtered out. Non-autistic brains dampen these inputs pre-attentively, that is, before they even reach awareness. This filtering process is called sensory gating, and in autistic people it is calibrated lower, so more reaches consciousness.
On top of that sits predictive coding: the brain continuously compares expectations with incoming data. In autistic processing, sensory input (what actually happens) is weighted more strongly than social prediction (what would usually be expected). Why the empathy myth is so persistent
The assumption that autistic people have less empathy traces back to the Theory of Mind model of the 1980s, which confused cognitive empathy (inferring mental states) with empathy as a whole. Smith (2009) introduced the term hyperempathy into this debate and described that affective empathy (the emotional resonance with others) is intact or even amplified in many autistic people, while cognitive empathy is harder. The two need to be thought of separately.
Bird and Cook (2013) provided the decisive statistical finding: what appears in studies as an "autistic empathy deficit" can be largely explained by accompanying alexithymia, that is, the difficulty of naming one's own and others' emotions, not by the feeling itself. They observe reactions, regulate their own expression, suppress impulsive responses and translate between their own perception and what seems expected of them. This does not happen as a conscious decision, but as a constant background process. A workday with many meetings is not simply a long day. It is a day during which this process runs for hours without a break.
The crying without a clear reason is most likely not an emotional collapse in the usual sense. It is restraint collapse. The nervous system has held regulation in place all day. When the outer demand drops away, that is, when she is at home with you and no longer needs to "function", the stored load discharges. The crying is the end of the holding capacity, not the beginning of a problem. That it happens with you is actually a sign of trust, not of instability.
What she describes as "picking up everyone else's moods" can be placed on two levels. That also explains why meetings are particularly costly. It is not only the topic that is processed but at the same time the sensory environment, every present person with their signals, the social expectations, her own contribution. That is an enormous processing load.
The withdrawal afterwards is not a reaction to the other person's annoyance as a social event. It is most likely sensory filter exhaustion. When the capacity of the nervous system has been used up by too many simultaneous inputs, complete reduction of stimulus is not a choice but a necessity. Hyperempathy is not a reason for guilt, neither for the autistic person who picks up too much, nor for the people around them whose moods arrive without anyone wanting it that way. It is a processing style that makes certain spaces expensive and other spaces relieving, and both become plannable once the mechanism is named.
When what has so far been read as "over-sensitive", "too easily moved to tears" or "has no empathy" suddenly has a well-described neurological profile, the question shifts: no longer "what is wrong with me", but "which environment fits this nervous system, and which recovery windows does it need". And loved ones stop reading their own behaviour as the trigger for what was in fact an accumulated day in an unfiltered system.
